Theme Installation and Initial Setup
Getting up and running with a the CityLights WordPress directory theme can be done in these quick and easy steps:
Step 1: Theme and Plugins Installation
Installing the Theme
- In the WordPress Administration screen, click Appearance > Themes.
- Click the Add New button.
- Click the Upload Theme button.
- Click the Choose file button and point it to the
citylights.zip
file located in your installation package. - WordPress will install the theme. Look for the success message Theme installed successfully.
- Click the Activate link to activate the theme. WordPress will display a New theme activated message.
Installing Required and Optional Plugins
One your theme is installed and activated, WordPress will display the following message:
This theme requires the following plugins: Revolution Slider and Visual Composer.
This theme recommends the following plugins: Dynamic Featured Image.
- Click the Begin installing plugins link.
- Check off all plugins on the list.
- Click the Bulk Actions selector and choose Install, then click the Apply button.
- WordPress will install and activate all plugin dependencies.
After plugin installation, you’ll see a message: All plugins installed and activated successfully.
Step 2: Import Sample Content
Your theme ships with sample content to help you get started. Here’s how to add it:
Sample Menu Content
- If you want to import the sample menu content in the top bar and main navbar, first create new menus:
- In the WordPress Administration screen, go to Appearance > Menus
- Click Create New Menu link.
- Fill out the new menu name: Main Menu and click the Create Menu button.
- Ensure the Main Menu display location is checked and click the Save Menu button
- Repeat these steps for the Top Bar Menu.
Sample Posts, Pages, Places and Other Content
- In the WordPress Administration screen, click Tools > Import.
- At the bottom of the Import Tools page you will see the WordPress Importer. If it is not installed, click the Install Now link.
- Click the Run Importer link.
- Click the Choose File button and point it to the
sample-content.xml
file, located in the Sample Content folder of your installation package. - Click the Upload file and import button.
- Be sure the Import Attachments checkbox is checked and click the Submit button.
- WordPress will import the sample content for you. That’s it!
- Go to the Posts, Places and Pages sections of the WordPress Administration screen to work with sample content.
Sample Sliders
- Click the Slider Revolution link in the WordPress Administration screen.
- Click the Import Slider button.
- Click the Choose File button and point it to the
slider-###.zip
file, located in the Sample Content folder of your installation package. - Import the slider.
- Repeat these steps for each slider.
Step 3: Configure the DMOPress Plugin
If you want to use the built-in maps (of course you do!) you should follow the DMOPress plugin Quick Start Guide and go directly to Step 2.
Step 4: Customize Your Layout and Color Scheme
You can customize layout, colors and many other options for your theme in the WordPress customizer.
- Click Appearance > Customize in the WordPress Administration screen.
- Click the Site Identity section. This is where you can upload your logo, favicon and set your site tagline.
- Click the back button to go back to the main Customizer screen.
- Visit each additional section in the WordPress Customizer to see all of the available options.
